Child Proofing Sharp Corners

You don’t have to have your home child proof before you bring the new born home from the hospital. It is when the baby begins to move around and crawl that you need to be prepared for anything that can be grabbed, pulled down or fell down like staircase to be made safe. Remember babies learn new skills fast so better to prepare sooner rather than later.

Begin child proofing our home by taking a walk through your house and look at everything through your baby’s eyes. It can be a good idea to get down on the floor at their level and see what dangers you can find. Be aware of open gates or doors that should be guarded, stairways, any heavy objects that can be reached and pulled down on top of the baby, sharp edges of furniture and cabinets that contain hazardous chemicals.

Also be aware of any wires or curtain ropes and cords that are hanging low enough for a baby to reach, chocking by blind cords and wires is a huge cause of infant fatalities.

From babies learning to walk up to young children there will never be a danger free zone in the home but all we can do is make it as safe as possible. Children will always run around the place and are always falling over so sharp edges on surfaces and furniture in the home are a real point of concern. Try to have coffee tables and other furniture with round edges is the best option but short of replacing all the furniture in the house you will have to make most of it child proof. There are foam and padded edge covers available for all the sharp corners and edges in your home from coffee tables, fireplace surrounds, window seats, railings and any other areas you can think of. Baby foam padding is available at any baby product store and is very cheap to buy.
