Home Security – Child Proofing

So you’ve just had a child, your own little perfect miracle. A newborn one of the more delicate things in a household and should be treated as such. Protecting the baby from harm is paramount for parents. Most people believe baby-proofing is unnecessary and only neurotic people baby-proof their houses. However, if you check the statistics regarding baby related accidents inside households, they are staggering. Even the smallest measure can prevent your baby from harming itself or falling into peril. Parents should make sure and install a home security system for the baby even before the baby is born. Therefore, parents will be completely comfortable with the changes and there will be no growing pains when there actually is a baby in the house. These home security measures could help keep from your baby from falling in harm’s way:

1) First of all, make sure and install safety latches on all of your kitchen appliances to avoid your baby from sticking his or her fingers inside. In addition, installing a safety knob on the stove can also prevent a baby from accidentally turning the stove on and being burn by the stove.

2)Safety latches should be installed on all kitchen and bathroom cabinets. It is inside these cabinets where some of the most dangerous things in your house exist. The cabinet under the sink and the bathroom cabinets are the most important cabinet doors to secure. These are the areas that normally contain the chemical cleaners and medications that could be potentially dangerous or life threatening if ingested. These types of accidents are how infants typically fall into harm’s way. Babies think that medication is candy or chemical liquids are juice and drink them unknowingly. Toddlers can also make this mistake so it is important to keep these latches secure until the child is old enough to think rationally.

3)Along with ingesting harmful chemicals, falls also make up a large party of baby accidents. The vast majority of falls occur near or on staircases. One way to keep your baby from becoming a statistic is to keep a gate at the top and the bottom of the staircase. This will prevent your baby from crawling or walking onto the stairs without supervision. Toddlers can also have trouble with the stairs; therefore, the gates should be left up until your child is at least 4.

4)Once a baby learns to walk, the corners of tables and other furniture become new obstacles to your baby’s safety. Toddlers are often careless as they run around and explore the world that is your house. Keeping protective rubber pads on the corner of your tables and furniture will keep your baby from poking his eye out or smashing his head on a sharp corner.

Remember that a baby is the most precious thing in your possession. Treat it as such. Make sure to take these and other precautions to make sure that your baby does not become an infant accident statistic. Make sure that your child stays safe.
