Facts about pets

Australian families who share their homes with pets number among the highest in the world, with 64% of households including pets. In those 7.5 million households, fish top the pet population at over 12 million, followed by birds, at 9 million. At almost 4 million, there are more dogs than either boys or girls under the age of 14 years, and our domestic cat population is approximately two and a half million. If we group horse for pleasure riding, rodents, rabbits, snakes, lizards and others together, we can add another 2 million pets.

Pet Supplies Pet association has been shown to have enormous positive benefits on health and wellbeing of Australians. When you have a pet as a member of your family, you will visit the doctor less frequently and use less medication, have lower cholesterol and lower blood pressure, recover from illness and surgery more rapidly, deal with stress better and be less likely to feel lonely. All in all, it is estimated that pet association saves the Australian health budget almost S4 billion annually.

Around 90% of Australian familles with pets, consider those pets as fully integrated family members and the primary caregiver who assumes responsibility for the pet in the majority of situations is female. Not surprisingly, expenditure on pets, pet care and pet products in Australia is placed at more than $4 billion annually and provides employment for more than 40,000 people. Of this expenditure, two thirds (66%) is spent on dogs and one quarter (25%) is spent on cats. Dogs therefore get the greater amount of attention in pet world.

Care and grooming products

Caring for pets requires time and energy on the part of the caregiver. In today’s busy world, time is a commodity in shorter supply than perhaps it once was. There are a lot of products available to help reduce the amount of time needed for pet care. Search Myshopping.com.au for pet care products for your particular animal.

There are automatic feeding and watering products that mean your animal can access food and water when they need it and don’t have to depend on you being there to attend to it. Having water readily available for dogs and cats is important because they dehydrate more quickly than humans. Automated pet feeders not only reduce the chore of being there to provide meals for your pets, but add the convenience of timing food releases for animals that may be subject to particular dietary needs. Using an elevated pet feeder can aid your pet’s digestion because the pet doesn’t have to strain and bend over to access the food. Portable watering and feeding products are useful for those who take their pets with them at work or on the move, and include drinking pouches and feedbags for dogs and cats.

The need to groom your pet depends a lot on your living environment, and whether (or how much) your pet is an indoor or outdoor pet. Grooming could be a daily, weekly or occasionally scheduled activity, and is necessary to keep the animal’s coat healthy and to eradicate fleas and other parasites. It is also important to keep dander in check. Grooming products for pets include products for coat maintenance, nail clipping, dental care, bathing and beauty. There is a huge range of shampoos, face washes, and deodorisers and skin care products as well as styling tools and bows and ribbons for beautification. Grooming tools you may require could include a grooming table, heated blower-dryer, combs, rakes and brushes. As well as nail files and clippers.

Accommodation and transport products

As we cram ourselves into smaller and smaller living spaces, we have a need to accommodate our pets in the most comfortable manner. There is a huge range of bedding, mat and cushion products for dogs and cats, as well as cages and aquariums for birds and fish. (Aquariums are also available for hermit crabs and snails). Small ‘housing’ products such as indoor and outdoor kennels and sleeping tents and bags come in a variety of sizes and styles to suit all kinds of living environments. Rugs and shelters are also important for keeping your pets warm during cold weather, and insulated or shaded shelters are important during warmer weather. Pet that suffer from arthritis can benefit from pet warming pads, while animals that have motor disabilities can benefit from special ramps and steps that aid them in their mobility.

As a large proportion of pet owners like to travel with their pets in cars or on bicycles, there are a large number of travelling options, including specially designed car seats, harness and soft cages. Some car seats double as a travel suitcase to carry your pet’s travel needs or as a bed for a comfortable night’s sleep. For the cyclist, there is a range of pet bicycle baskets available with different safety and security features.

One of the reasons that pets help foster better health is due to the time we spend walking, running or playing with them. Searching Myshopping.com.au for leads and collars will yield a tremendous variety of products. Leads that you can belt around your waist give you ‘hands-free’ control of your dog while you walk or jog freely. Collars not only provide a way to carry your animal’s registration tags, but also provide a unique identity for your pet. If your pet is small or has a disability, you can get a pet stroller or a pocket pouch to walk or carry your pet.

Safe and secure enclosures can keep pets from wandering off, while giving them an outdoor experience. Safety pet fences or cat fences are wire mesh enclosures that can be used in backyards or on balconies to keep you pet safe while giving tem the ability to stretch in the fresh air. Portable soft pens, many of which can be coupled together to enclose a larger area, are ideal for containing a pet indoors or blocking off an entrance.

Safety products and toys

There are occasions when both pets and humans need to be kept safe from each other and from other dangers in the home and neighbourhood. These can include muzzles and safety restraints, as well as steps and life preservers to use in shimming pools and at beaches. The elderly pet may need special pet stairs or slings to help with mobility, or a brace that acts as a support crutch.

There is no shortage of toys for your pet available through Myshopping.com.au and may include scratching posts and tunnels for your cat; Frisbees, balls and bones for your dog, mirrors and balls for your birds, racing tracks for rodents. You can even find the more unusual toys along with training devices; clothing articles and pampering products here on Myshopping.com.au just click and search.

There are several attributes of baby gates that should kept in mind before buying them. The most distinguished ones to be considered are the height, fixation category, latch system. The baby gates installed close to steps hold a much bigger responsibility than that by the baby gates placed in other locations.

Though the peak of the gate that equals that of the baby is just the right choice, the gate may be trespassed simply as the baby grows over a time period. Though pressure mounting baby gates are cheaper (stating off at 30$) than the permanent counterparts, they cannot be thought about for placement near the vital area of steps.

Wooden baby gates for steps available in both light and dark oak stain with handrails accessorize the decor of your house. The attribute of fixation system of the baby gate needs to be considered when the location of the location of baby gate is close to the steps. Property of latch system that has to get chosen majorly depends on the age of your kid.

A toddler/baby would find it tough to even open a latch that’s similar to one at the doors your place. However, for the kids aging two years can simply open such latches and gain access to the areas outside the baby gates, for the kids belonging to this group, it would be preferable to use a baby gate with latch system that can only be functioned from a distant location with the assistance of a RC or a control button placed on a far off wall of the house at a height beyond the reach of kids.

It is always recommended to perform a research in the market about the reputation of the company you’re looking forward to buy the gate from. Majorly all the Pressure mounted gates are straightforward to fasten to the walls of halls and kitchen doors are now fabricated with high-strength, flexible material like Plexiglas that may expand up to fifty inches.

(By Joe Cinova)

Â

If you’re asking this simple question, you probably already have a reason you’re searching for a pet gate. The list of possibilities is endless I’m sure. They got into something they shouldn’t have, they chewed up a particular piece of furniture, when someone comes to the door they jump on them or you just don’t want them in a certain area of the house.

You might think this is an easy task and for some of us it probably is. But for a lot of people it’s not so straightforward without a little forethought before running out and buying a pet gate. Let’s take a look at some of the items to consider before making that purchase.

Let me tell you a little story. I have two Miniature Pinschers or Min Pins for short. The “girls” were only about 10 months old at the time. It was Christmas Eve 2006. My wife and I went to church that evening and “locked” the girls up before we left.

Since Min Pins are so active and they were barely a couple of pounds in weight, we used a 4 sided metal pet gate to contain them in the kitchen. It was quite large compared to the girls with plenty of room for their potty paper and water bowl.

We got home about an hour and a half later. We went into the kitchen and the “girls” were GONE! Yep they were gone. I looked at my wife and we both ran looking thru the house. We had 2 floors so I ran upstairs. As I was half way up the stairs I looked up and saw the girls with their tiny little heads sticking thru the railing.

I was shocked and scared they might fall since they had never gone upstairs before since they were too small to climb up. I called my wife and we brought them back to their makeshift pen and put them back inside. We thought that maybe we both forgot to lock them up.

I started to make something to eat and then it happened. I watched in amazement as these tiny, little, several pound pups went to the corner of the pen where it was at a right angle, and proceeded to climb up like spidermen, get to the top and jump out. The pen was 3 foot high! We couldn’t stop laughing when they look at us like “what’s the big deal”? It was a great moment we’ll never forget, but it taught us a big lesson.

Sorry for getting off track but it proves that you need to be a little more educated than thinking you just buy a pet gate to contain your little friends. Let’s take a look at what we should consider.

How big is your dog? Are they aggressive? Where do you want to keep them confined? What material of construction should you use? How much should you or can you afford to spend? How should the gate be made? Meaning you should consider the gaps or slats it has, screws etc. Ease of installation. Does it have a door to open so you can get thru or do you have to climb over it. Does it have a latch? Is it easy to use? Is it easy to store when not in use?

Â

How does this list break down into practical information? Let’s look at each item.

If you have a big dog, a flimsy little pet gate isn’t going to do a great job of keeping them confined. An aggressive dog will either break the gate or jump over it. Something to consider when you buy one. Where you keep them confined will determine what kind of gate you need. Are you blocking a door, a wide space or a staircase? This needs to be taken into account. Is your dog a chewer? If you buy a plastic pet gate not only will they chew thru it but they may swallow parts that can hurt them. Keep this in mind. A metal gate is the strongest but not very attractive. The alternative may be a combination of metal and finished wood. Although more costly it will probably be just what you are looking for. Spending a lot of money doesn’t guarantee a good gate for you pet. Conversely getting a less expensive gate doesn’t mean it wouldn’t do a great job. All things need to be weighed out carefully to help make the best choice. Remembering my little story, look at the pet gate closely. Can your pet climb it and get over it? Are there items or protrusions that may hurt your pet? Can they get a paw or their head stuck in a slat or corner of the gate? Be wary of these little incidentals. Depending on the pet gate you buy will dictate the method of installation. There are three types you can buy; pressure locking, free-standing and mechanically attached with screws to mount to a doorframe. Again, each has their benefits and their downside. Taking each into consideration will help make your decision the right one. Especially if you’re older, climbing over these gates can be a real pain and downright dangerous. Consider getting one with a door you can open. Sometimes latches on pet gates can cause problems. Even pressure mounted gates have a “latch” and are difficult to operate. Make sure you get the one suitable for you. Finally, what about storing them when you want them out of the way. If they are bolted up, free standing gates it may be tough to get them stored away easily. If you have the room it’s not a problem.

Â

Let’s recap. Be certain to get one to fit the opening, easy to install for your capability, protects your pet, won’t allow them to escape the area, is of the right quality for your needs, is durable and accomplishes what you set out to achieve in the first place. If you love your pets they way we love ours a little extra consideration makes all the difference in the world.

Everyone that’s in the market to buy a pet gate starts to quickly accumulate a list of questions about all the different types of gates. Sometimes the questions can get to be too much. So here’s a list of those questions and some answer to help you decide what you need to do.

1. What are the measurements of each style of gate? Although similar in dimensions, the gate measurements of each style will vary by manufacturer by up to several inches in widths and heights. The Product details sheet will have that information.

2. Are there gates that open wider than 72 inches? No. The maximum opening most gates will provide a barrier for is 72 inches, which is wider than most safety gates on the market. For larger openings 2 gates would be appropriate.

3. Can any style of gate be used at the top of a staircase and be mounted to the spindles? They all look like they can. The only gates that should be used at the top of a staircase are designated as a “Stairway Gate. These gates have special hardware or mounting cups for correct installation. This will often include special hinges so that it can only open one way. The gate should never be allowed to open over the stairs! This is an extreme safety hazard.

4. Do all the styles of gates come in multiple styles and colors? Most styles of the pet gates come in black and white. If a particular style comes in a wooden configuration it may come in cherry, oak, light oak, natural, maple or others.

5. My dog chews everything. What Pet gate should I buy? At first impulse a metal gate comes to mind. But dogs can still chew this type of gate and hurt or break their teeth. So when you look for a metal gate, get one that has slats instead of a narrow mesh. It’s a lot more difficult for them to chew on. Stay away from plastic gates in this situation. Not only will they chew it up but they may swallow the pieces and cause problems you aren’t even aware of after they do it.

6. What if there is a baseboard in the way? If you’re mounting the gate to an area where there is a baseboard, then take a small piece of wood, (I wood paint it to match the wall, the same thickness of the baseboard and put it behind the upper adjustment screw or mounting bracket you are using. Remember to keep the gate parallel to the floor for the smoothest operation of the gate possible.

7. Can I mount a gate to drywall without any wood trim? You can but it is important that you find a wooden stud located behind the drywall so you have a good mounting surface for any bracket screws you may need to use.

8. There is a slight angle where I intend on installing the gate. What do I do now? Using a gate that either has or can use an “Angle-Mount” hardware kit is just the thing. This kit is designed specifically for this purpose.

9. What does “JPMA Certified” mean? This stands for Juvenile Products Manufacturers Association. If you see this certification stamp it means that the gate has also been tested and approved for use around children according to the standards of this organization.

10. I have a big pet an a small one. Do any gates have a door so the little one can pass thru? Yes Carlson Mfg. is the only pet gate manufacturer that has a built-in pet door that permits smaller pets to pass through while others stay put.

11. I want to use my gates in several rooms but the door frames are different widths. Do I need specially sized gates for each on? No you don’t. An extension gate, pressure mounted gate of a free standing gate can either be adjusted for each individual doorway or the free standing gate can be made to close off the widest opening and them be used for any of the widths.

12. I’m pretty much all thumbs. Are these gates easy to install in my house? No matter what gate you buy they are all very easy to install. The simplest form of gate is the free standing. As the name implies there is no installation. Once you assembled it you just place it in position. The pressure mount gate used an adjustable swing arm or adjustable thumb wheels to create the pressure. The only gates that require true installation are the ones requiring mounting hardware. These gates use hardware mounting screws that attach the gate to a wall, doorway or frame.

13. These extension panels, what are they for? Although Pet Gates come in lots of shapes and sizes you may find yourself in a situation where you need a little bit wider gate than what come in a standard purchase. In this case an extension gate would be in order. By adding an extension panel you’ll be able to fit it in that space you just measured. Typically you can use up to 2 extensions, but considering they come in widths from 5” up to 24” you shouldn’t have a problem finding the size you need.

14. I see all these different gates but I don’t want to climb over them. What gate should I use? The best gate for this situation is a hand free operated gate. One of the most popular gates sold is the The First Years Hands Free, Foot Pedal Operated Pet Gate with Extension. This is absolutely the best choice for what you are describing.
